| Author: | Steven A. Oosthuyse |
Abstract:
The growth responses to previously proposed pruning practices (Oosthuyse, 1992), which are being carried out by mango growers in South Africa, have led to some interesting insights.
Some principles relating to mango pruning, and the adopted practices of pruning mango trees in South Africa are disclosed and detailed here.
Considered are pruning procedures after planting, shoot tipping to encourage branching of young trees, pruning to stimulate flushing of young bearing trees, and size maintenance pruning of fully-grown trees.
The time of first cropping in relation to orchard performance in the long-term is also considered.
