ISHS Acta Horticulturae 455: V International Mango Symposium

SEASONAL UPTAKE AND UTILIZATION OF NITROGEN BY "SENSATION" MANGO TREES

Authors:   P.J.C. Stassen, B.P.H. Janse van Vuuren
Keywords:   Mangifera indica, requirement, minerals
Abstract:
Annual nitrogen applications are required to maintain the nitrogen status of mango trees. Applications at the wrong time may give rise to undesirable vegetative growth and physiological problems with the fruit.

The aim of this study is to determine when "Sensation" mango trees take up nitrogen and to which plant parts the nitrogen is diverted. In addition it has to be determined to what extent nitrogen can be recycled from the permanent structures of the tree.

Calculations indicating the actual annual nitrogen requirement of mango trees will be given which may serve as guidelines for nitrogen fertilization.
