ISHS Acta Horticulturae 455: V International Mango Symposium

STRATEGIES, PROGRESS AND RESULTS FROM THE SOUTH AFRICAN MANGO BREEDING PROGRAMME

Authors:   B. Cilliers, C.F. Human, J.C. Snyman, K. Carstens
Abstract:
Selection mainly from two seedling mango populations was completed with the registration of four new cultivars in 1990. A comprehensive breeding programme was initiated immediately thereafter. Sound genetic strategies were introduced, evaluations of selections became more sofisticated, investigative work on rootstock genotypes were started, and annual expansion of the programme was permitted. Particular attention is given to strategies with respect to germplasm usage, pollination control, regional evaluation of seedlings and selections, and to post harvest testing of selections. Information on the physical size of the programme and of the properties of some cultivars and selections are presented.
