Abstract:
The nutrient requirement of mango trees can only be determined by establishing when and in what quantity each element is taken up.
The aim of this study is to determine to what extent each plant part needs phosphorus, potassium, calcium and magnesium.
Of particular importance is the mineral uptake of the fruit.
For this study young bearing “Sensation” mango trees in sand culture were destructively sampled.
The trees were regularly irrigated with a balanced nutrient solution and sampled monthly.
The samples were divided into mature leaves, new leaves, new growth, fruit (edible portion and seed), bark, wood and roots.
The concentrations as well as the absolute quantities of the different elements were determined so that calculations could be made with regard to the relative demand of each separate part of the tree.
This study provides some valuable information on the actual uptake and utilization of the more important macro elements.
