ISHS Acta Horticulturae 455: V International Mango Symposium

MANGO MODEL: STARCH DISTRIBUTION IN DIFFERENT TISSUES OF "SENSATION" MANGO TREES OF VARYING AGES

Authors:   S.J. Davie, P.J.C. Stassen
Keywords:   reserve carbohydrate, biennial bearing, alternate bearing
Abstract:
"Sensation" mango trees of different ages were excavated and the wet mass, dry mass and starch content determined. The tree components were separated, weighed, dried and sampled for analysis.

The percentage starch as well as the absolute starch content of the different parts of "Sensation" mango trees (one- to 18-years-old) are presented in graphic form. The starch concentrations for the different plant parts are also presented for different times of the year depicting the annual accumulation and depletion cycles. Trees of similar size and from the same "Sensation" orchard as the excavated trees, were sampled at different times throughout the preceding year for the determination of leaf, root and xylem starch. In addition the starch requirement of the fruit borne by the trees is presented to illustrate the high demand that fruit production places on the trees' photosynthesis mechanism and its dependence on starch reserves.
