EFFECTS OF NUTRIENTS AND GROWTH SUBSTANCES ON INTERNAL BREAKDOWN OF SENSATION MANGO FRUITS

Authors:   J.M. Hermoso, E. Guirado, R. Gómez, A. Castilla, R. Velasco, J.M. Farré
Abstract:
Leaf application of CaCl2, Ca-EDTA, KCl or MgCl2 did not affect mesocarp Ca content, internal breakdown or stem-end cavity. Leaf Ca levels were temporarily increased by 6 applications of CaCl2, but decreased to control levels by the end of the season. Single applications of GA3, 3,5,6-TPA, with or without 3 applications of Ca-EDTA, did not influence Ca concentration of leaves, internal breakdown or stem-end cavity.

Ca-EDTA in vaseline, applied at the base of the fruit peduncle, significantly decreased internal breakdown and stem-end cavity. It also reduced K content of bark and wood of the peduncle under and outside the treated area.

Zn, B and Cu injected into the trunk in spring slightly increased internal breakdown and stem-end cavity. Only leaf B levels were increased by the injections.

Mean internal breakdown and stem-end cavity were negatively correlated with mean fruit size and mean shoot growth of the tree.
