ISHS Acta Horticulturae 455: V International Mango Symposium

PREFACE

Authors:   S. Gazit, R. Dor, E. Tomer, U. Lavi
Abstract:
We are very pleased to present the Acta Horticulturae edition (two volumes) containing the scientific activity presented in the 5th International Mango Symposium which took place in Tel Aviv, Israel, September 1–6, 1996.

Mango is known to be one of the world's finest fruits. It is mainly grown in Asia and South America but its share among the variety of fruits is continuously increasing in the markets of the western world. The shift to a modern export industry is dependent on the acquiring of basic knowledge as well as practical modern technologies in the various aspects of the mango industry. The series of the International Mango Symposia are aimed towards this goal. The 5th International Symposium attracted 250 participants from 30 countries to Israel, which, although not a traditional mango growing country, has an active and developing mango industry as well as ongoing modern research.

The symposium included lectures, posters, workshops, as well as enlightening professional tours and an exhibition, which allowed direct communictions and discussions between people from various countries and different areas of interests.

These two volumes have seven chapters entitled: World Production; Physiology and Reproductive Biology; Genetics Breeding and Biotechnology; Horticultural Practices; Mango Diseases; Post Harvest Physiology; and Pest Control. Each one comprises the full manuscripts presented in the lectures and posters at the symposium.

We would like to thank all the contributors to this edition and especially the scientific editors, the organizing company 'Target Tours' and all the authors.

We hope that the future Mango Symposia will continue to advance and improve the knowledge and methodologies needed for further development of this crop around the globe.

Looking forward to continuous communication among all 'mango lovers'!
