ISHS Acta Horticulturae 454: III International Symposium on New Floricultural Crops

COLLECTION OF HIPPEASTRUM SPP., ALSTROEMERIA SPP. AND OTHER BRAZILIAN BULBOUS SPECIES

Authors:   A. Tombolato, L. Matthes
Keywords:   Amaryllis, Amaryllidaceae, Alstroemeriaceae, cormous plants, endangered plants, breeding, ornamentals, bulbs
Abstract:
The collection of ornamental bulbous species native to Brazil started in 1989. The aim was to collect Alstroemeria and Hippeastrum to support breeding programs on these genera at this Institute. The goals of these breeding programs are to create different types of plants and flowers than the usual forms that already exist as commercial varieties. Heat and drought resistance are also important characteristics for our growing conditions. Other interesting genera have been collected because of their showy flowers or aspects of growth habit, such as Griffinia (Amaryllidaceae), Neomarica (Iridaceae), Gomphrena (Amaranthaceae).
