EFFECTS OF BULB WEIGHT ON THE GROWTH AND FLOWERING OF LEUCOCORYNE COQUIMBENSIS F. PHILL.

Authors:   H.H. Kim, K. Ohkawa, E. Nitta
Keywords:   Liliaceae, cut flower, Chile
Abstract:
Leucocoryne is being evaluated as an early spring cut flower. These long-lasting flowers are beautiful with fresh colors and a pleasing fragrance.

The effect of bulb weight on the growth and flowering of L. coquimbensis was investigated. Though 0.1 – 0.2 g bulbs emerged and flowered, bulbs larger than 0.3 g produced more cut flower stems that were longer and heavier. During one growing season, 0.1 – 0.2 g bulbs grew to larger than 1.0 g, which can produce high quality cut flowers in the subsequent season. As bulb weight increased, the rate of bulb enlargement decreased.
