ISHS Acta Horticulturae 454: III International Symposium on New Floricultural Crops

ALL YEAR ROUND PRODUCTIVITY OF F1 AND BC1 PROGENIES BETWEEN DENDRANTHEMA GRANDIFLORUM AND D. SHIWOGIKU

Authors:   M. Douzono, H. Ikeda
Keywords:   interspecific hybridization, chrysanthemum breeding
Abstract:
Dendranthema shiwogiku is an octoploid wild species on the Pacific coast in western Japan, and has many small capitulums on each stem in a well-arranged spray. The authors tried to breed an interspecific hybrid cultivars of D. shiwogiku and D. grandiflorum. By a backcross of chrysanthemum cultivars to interspecific F1 progenies, development of new cultivars was considered possible. Cut flower longevity was not good with BC1 pedigrees tested in this paper and further screening of parent chrysanthemum cultivars is necessary. Some lines of D. shiwogiku is reported to be resistant to white rust (Puccinia horiana), and resistance assay will also be necessary.
