INTRODUCTION OF BACTERIAL WILT (PSEUDOMONAS CARYOPHYLLI) RESISTANCE IN DIANTHUS WILD SPECIES TO CARNATION

Keywords:   Dianthus caryophyllus, Dianthus capitatus, carnation bacterial wilt, interspecific hybridization
Abstract:
Interspecific hybridization between carnation (Dianthus caryophyllus) and Dianthus capitatus, a highly resistant wild species to bacterial wilt caused by Pseudomonas caryophylli, was carried out in order to introduce the resistance into carnation cultivars. Obtained F1 seedlings were tested for the bacterial wilt resistance using screening methods. We found out that resistance of Dianthus wild species to Pseudomonas caryophylli was inherited by interspecific hybridization. Thus, a new bacterial wilt resistant line ‘91BO4-2’ was selected out of F1 progenies derived from the cross of spray-type carnation cv. ‘Super Gold’ x D. capitatus. This line was highly resistant to bacterial wilt as well as D. capitatus. However, as the flower quality of ‘91BO4-2’ is not high enough for commercial production, further improvement through backcross is still necessary.
