| Abstract:
Japanese demand and production of ornamental plants are steadily increasing year by year. While the environment of agriculture is becoming severe, and agricultural production remains stagnant, the gross output of ornamental plants has increased more than 4 times in the last 20 years, reaching 614 billion yen in 1993. In 1975, output was only 138 billion yen, and occupied 1.5% of the total agricultural production. This figure increased to 5.9% in 1993. The total cropping acreage of ornamental plants has also increased, reaching 47,400 hectares in 1993, although the total agricultural cropping acreage has been decreasing year by year. In the cropping acreage of ornamental plants, cut flowers, potted plants and bedding plants occupied 20,577 hectares in 1993, including 9,755 hectares of protected cultivation, which was the largest in the world. In this report, present aspects and prospects of ornamental plants in Japan are discussed. | |
