EXTENDING STORAGE LIFE OF JABOTICABA (MYRCIARIA CAULIFLORA (MART.) BERG) FRUITS.

Authors:   O. Duarte, M. Huete, P. Lüdders
Abstract:
Trials to extend storage life of jaboticaba fruits were done with fully ripe and unripe fruits. These included storing at 6, 12 and 24°C with or without waxing using "Brogdex Tomato Wax" or wrapping with "Omnifilm" plastic film or a combination of both. No fungicides were used.

Unripe fruits did not complete ripening at any temperature and were discarded at later trials.

Storage at 24°C did not allow for more than 2 – 3 days, however when this fruit was waxed and/or wrapped in plastic film it kept in good condition for almost a week in some trials.

The best treatment was to store fully ripe fruits in plastic trays at 12°C after waxing them and/or wrapping these trays with plastic film. These treatments extended commercial life to 3 weeks and sometimes 4, as measured by weight loss, appearance, as well as fruit flavor and texture as determined by a tasting panel at the end of storage and after 2 more days at room temperature. Wrapping in plastic film only or combined with waxing was slightly superior to waxing alone in final fruit quality. At 6°C chilling injury occurred.
