Abstract:
During a five year harvesting crops, the performance of 108 seedlings of Brazilian guava was evaluated under the environmental conditions of the coastal wood-forest region in the State of Pernambuco, Brazil. Out of 108 genotypes, 10 were selected based of yields higher than 14 kg/year, and IPA 9.2 was the outstanding genotype with an average production of 17,16 kg/year. Another selection criteria used were fruit number and fruit weight. Among the top 10 yielding genotypes, the range for fruit number varied from 1.755 to 2.839 fruits/tree, while for fruit weight the range varied from 12 to 16 g. Chemical analysis of ripe fruits did not show any significant differences among genotypes for both TSS (15,1 ± 0,6 Brix) and acid contents (1.04% ± 0.06). Harvesting season was found to be related to rainfall distributions in a given year and most of the selected genotypes concentrated fruit ripening in two main seasons: February - March and August - September.
