FORCED PRODUCTION OF GUAVA IN MEXICO |

| Abstract:
One of the main problems that producers of guava in Mexico have, is the short harvest period of the fruit (October to December), which causes the market to become saturated and prices to fall. With the objective of having the fruit available during a longer period of time, foliar applications of high doses of fertilizers were done in three orchards: one in Calvillo, Aguascalientes, and two in Michoacan, Mexico. Calvillo has a dry steppe climate with mean annual temperatures above 18 °C. The treatments were done in a 15-year-old orchard of cv. media china. Michoacan has a dry subtropical climate with mean annual temperatures above 18 °C, and there 7 and 18 year-old orchards were used. At Calvillo, a control was the treatment ordinarily used in the region and consisted in subjecting the plants to a short period of water stress in order to promote floral induction. The results showed that 12% urea sprayed on the foliage of guava plants caused the harvest period to begin 30 days earlier on average, compared to the control.
