COMPARISON OF NON-DESTRUCTIVE METHODS OF ESTIMATING LEAF AREA IN APPLE TREE CANOPIES |

| Abstract:
Leaf area of six-year-old 'Braeburn'/M.26 apple trees was assessed at full canopy using conventional leaf/shoot sampling methods and more recent, indirect techniques (multiple-light sensors, Demon device and photographing the shadow area of the tree). Regression analysis showed that all methods were well correlated to each other (r2>0.69), indicating their suitability for estimating total leaf area. These relationships also suggest that full canopy leaf area of fully mature apple trees can be predicted with reasonable accuracy from rapid indirect assessments. Time requirements and practicability of each non-destructive method are discussed. | |
