| Abstract:
Economic and growth characteristics of 3 training systems were studied: the Duhanhedge, the structured spindle and the free spindle. It was concluded that up until the fifth season the free spindle was the most economical tree form. Cumulative yield was highest in this system, while training and picking costs were lowest. From additional trials, it was also shown that the stump pruning used in the free spindle system could be a means of decreasing bare wood formation. Finally, stumps between 10 and 20 cm length were most useful in rejuvenating the tree. | |
