Abstract:
The Penta and Tetra rootstocks for peach and nectarines were obtained after 18 years of work by evaluating 10,000 plum seedlings obtained from open pollination of 93 plum cultivars. The evaluation and selection was mainly based on the propagation ability and graft compatibility of the plum seedlings with peach and nectarine scions. After observing closely the different plum genotypes, the following conclusions were reached:
  1. seedlings originating from Japanese plum cultivars have a better propagation ability than those originating from European plum cultivars;
  2. graft compatibility of peach is much higher with the seedlings originating from European plum cultivars than with those originating from Japanese plum cultivars;
  3. graft compatibility of peach cultivars is higher than that of nectarines with the European type seedlings, whilst similar with the Japanese types;
  4. graft compatibility of the apricot (P. armeniaca) with Japanese and European type seedlings is similar, but much higher than that of peaches and nectarines. Penta and Tetra rootstocks are described.
