THE EFFECT OF SUBSTRATE TEMPERATURE ON STRAWBERRY PERFORMANCE ON PEAT BAGS

Author:   F. Lieten
Abstract:
During two successive years a trial was conducted in a greenhouse on the strawberry variety 'Elsanta' grown on peat bags. The effect of four root temperatures on vegetative growth, earliness, fruit size and subsequent yield were studied. In the first trial the substrate temperatures were kept at a minimum of 8, 12, 16 and 20 °C respectively. In the second trial the substrate temperatures were kept at a minimum of 6, 8, 12, and 16 °C respectively. Higher root temperatures could improve earliness by almost one week. However leaf surface, leaf fresh weight, length of petioles, fruit size and subsequent yield were reduced with increased temperature levels.
