THE INFLUENCE OF ORGANIC SUBSTRATES ON GROWTH AND PHYSIOLOGICAL PARAMETERS OF VEGETABLE SEEDLINGS

Authors:   N. Gruda, W.H. Schnitzler
Keywords:   Wood fiber, N-immobilization, lettuce, Lactuca sativa L., Photosynthesis
Abstract:
N-immobilization can be a cause of nutritional imbalance on young seedlings grown in organic substrates particularly with wood fiber. But there are wood fiber products in the market impregnated with slow release nitrogen source. Lettuce seedlings in greenhouse and phytotron were used as a model to be grown in three different substrates (wood fiber impregnated and unimpregnated, and peat) and with three N-rates (10, 20 and 40 mg/pot). Evaluation criteria were plant growth, net photosynthesis, N-uptake as well as N-balance and -deficit. Lettuce seedlings cultivated in impregnated wood fiber substrate performed better than in peat or unimpregnated wood fiber. The impregnation with a slow release N-source obviously provided enough N for the initial microbial fixation.
