DIFFERENTIAL GROWTH AND YIELD RESPONSES OF TOMATO PLANTS GROWN IN DIFFERENT SOLUTION CONCENTRATIONS USING NUTRIENT FILM TECHNIQUE AND SAND CULTURE

Authors:   M. Ismail, R. Ahmad
Keywords:   solution concentration, NFT, sand culture, tomatoes, growth, yield
Abstract:
The differential responses of solution concentration on growth, water relations, stomatal conductance and yield were investigated on tomatoes grown either in Nutrient Film Technique (NFT) or sand culture. The plants were grown at three different levels of solution concentrations, i.e. 3,6, and 9 mS cm-1. There were differences on growth and yield of tomatoes between the different growing systems. In general, plant growth and yield were better in NFT compared to sand culture grown plants. In both growing systems, increasing solution concentration led to a reduction in growth, leaf water potential, stomatal conductance and yield; greater reduction were observed in sand culture compared to NFT grown plants.
