Abstract:
Plants of shortday strawberry (Fragaria x ananassa Duch. 'Elsanta') were grown on rockwool with four rates of Zn in the nutrient solution (0.5, 5, 10 and 15 mmol/l). A Zn concentration lower than 5 mmol/l in the nutrient solution corresponded with leaf values lower than 20 ppm and were associated with Zn deficiency symptoms.
Yield, pollen germination, fruit set and fruit size were significantly reduced by Zn concentrations lower than 5 mmol/l.
The results indicate that the range of Zn concentration in the nutrient solution for satisfactory growth and fruit quality of 'Elsanta', grown on rockwool, appears to be between 5 and 15 mmol/l.
