ISHS Acta Horticulturae 45: II Discussion Meeting on Bitter Pit in Apples

PROBLEMS OF PLANT PHYSIOLOGY IN RELATION TO BITTER PIT - THE FUNCTION OF CALCIUM

Author:   G. Buchloh
Abstract:
F. Bangerth: The function of calcium in the cell and in the subcellurlar units of apple fruit

Ca has attracted the interest of plant physiologists early and very frequently. Nevertheless our present knowledge about the sites and the modes of action of Ca in plants is rather restricted. As we are mainly concerned with fruits we can omit the Ca-deficiency effects on roots, shoots, leaves etc. and concentrate more on the effect of Ca on the cellular and subcellular level. In this area Ca affects a number of different processes which may or may not be involved in bitter pit development.
