Abstract:
The First Discussion Meeting on Bitter Pit in Apples was held under the auspices of ISHS at Haren, the Netherlands, in 1969. Participants in that meeting decided to convene again in a few years' time.
This second meeting took place in Bonn from May 15 to 17, 1974.
Colleagues from six European countries spent these days at the Institut für Obstbau und Gemüsebau der Universität Bonn, discussing the problems involved in bitter pit.
Of course, not all questions arising in this field could be solved during the three-day-symposium.
Participants, however, agreed upon that some new measures and ideas have been set up and that further steps have been made to help the growers in over-coming the serious disorder bitter pit.
The proceedings of the second meeting kindly published by ISHS include the introduction papers which were given by invited speakers, and the main parts of the discussion.
The literature referred to in the various introduction papers was compiled into one reference list.
A comprehensive review of literature on bitter pit is to be found in "Annotated Bibliography of Bitter Pit in Apples" published by G. Bünemann in 1972. It can be ordered from Universitäts-bibliothek der Technischen Universität Berlin, Abt.
Publikationen, D-1 Berlin 12, Stra e des 17. Juni, 135.
Participants of the Second Meeting on Bitter Pit in Apples did find it worthwhile continuing these symposia and will meet again at East Malling Research Station in 1978.
