THE QUALITY OF GROUNDWATER IN THE NORTHERN PART OF YUGOSLAVIA

Abstract:
The quality of surface and groundwater used in agricultural production is of essential importance. In some cases, however, the quality of water used for this purpose does not meet the adopted criteria. One of the reasons for such a situation is the evidently increasing water pollution by waste waters originated from the industry, agriculture and urban settlements. To deal with this problem, a multidisciplinary approach is required. The data on long-term regular monitoring of the levels and parameters of the quality of groundwaters at 34 selected observation points (22 in the region of Backa and 12 in Banat), were subjected to a consistent analysis. Groundwater quality was determined using several classification methods for irrigation water: classification after Nejgebauer, US Salinity Laboratory and Stebler's classification. A comparison of water quality determined by different classification methods was made possible using the average values of parameters determined. This made possible to get a unified evaluation of water quality at all observation points and for all the regions.
