IRRIGATION OF POTATOES UNDER CONDITIONS OF WATER DEFICIT

Authors:   Z. Zhivkov, S. Kaltcheva
Keywords:   Potatoes, irrigation regime, evapotranspiration, "Water-yield" relationship, application depth, fertilization
Abstract:
A long-term field experiment with potatoes grown on leached cinnamon forest soils under optimum water supply and a continuous shortage of irrigation water was conducted in the region of Sofia. The study period covered a normal year with respect to rainfall and temperature sums from April to September as well as two very hot and dry years. Based on the field trials, the "water-yield" relationship, the number and frequency of water applications were established. The effect of irrigation, potato yields and loss of production due to irrigation water shortage were determined. Reducing the amount of irrigation by 20, 40 and 60 per cent as compared to the optimum irrigated treatment No 2, resulted in production losses of 13.2%, 18.4%, and 22.5%, respectively. However, these values vary quite a lot during the different years and are not adequate to the deficit in irrigation water applied.
