ISHS Acta Horticulturae 449: II International Symposium on Irrigation of Horticultural Crops

RESPONSE OF ASPARAGUS (ASPARAGUS OFFICINALIS L.) TO POST-HARVESTING IRRIGATION

Author:   A. Battilani
Keywords:   Asparagus officinalis L., irrigation, market quality, gross margin
Abstract:
The experiment was conducted in the Po valley (Italy), with the aim to test the effectiveness of post-harvesting irrigation in a sub-humid area and on soils with good water storage. The yield of high quality spears did not vary in relation to water applied, even if the marketable product achieved a higher average weight when irrigated and a higher rate of incidence on the total yield. The expected decrease of the small class rate in favour of the commercial class did not occur. The number of spears per crown, that represent the main production component, was found to be negatively influenced by irrigation. Dry matter production in the aerial part and the number of ferns per crown were slightly higher in irrigated treatments, but had no significant effects on the yields obtained the following year.
