ISHS Acta Horticulturae 448: III International Symposium on Mineral Nutrition of Deciduous Fruit Trees

POSSIBILITIES TO MEET NUTRITIONAL REQUIREMENTS OF FRUIT TREES AND ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION

Author:   E. Szúcs

Abstract:
Environmental protection is served primarily avoiding over-fertilization in accordance with the nutritional status of the soil and the demand on nutrients of the trees. Favourable nourishment of fruit trees can be assured by a suitable nutrient supply in root zone, depending on soil character. If necessary the soil has to be filled up with P, K, Ca, Mg elements.

The fundaments of nutritional status of the soil should be established at the time of tree planting. The nutritional status is maintained or modified to recover the nutrients used up by the trees of the actual orchards in the bearing age. The results of plant analysis and soil factors influencing the efficiency of fertilizers are used in maintenance fertilization.

This paper presents the method for calculation both types of fertilization based on field and model experiments, and on empirical data. Some further possibilities of environmental protection are also mentioned, such as selection of fertilizers, time and method of application.
