ISHS Acta Horticulturae 448: III International Symposium on Mineral Nutrition of Deciduous Fruit Trees

PREHARVEST NITROGEN OPTIMIZATION FOR MAXIMIZING YIELD AND POSTHARVEST FRUIT QUALITY OF APPLES

Author:   E. Fallahi
Keywords:   apple, fruit quality, nitrogen, post harvest
Abstract:
Influence of various amounts and times of nitrogen (N) application on yield, fruit quality, and mineral partitioning in ‘Fuji’ and ‘Redspur Delicious’ apple (Malus domestica Bork.) cultivars were studied. ‘Fuji’ and ‘Redspur Delicious’ fruit from trees that received low levels of annual N applications had smaller size, higher firmness, and more red color than those from trees with higher N applications. Fruit from ‘Redspur Delicious’ trees with higher N applications had higher respiration and evolved ethylene. Nitrate contamination appeared to reach to harmful levels when the applications of N exceeded 453.6 g of actual N per tree.
