YOUNG SWEET CHERRY TREES RESPOND FAVOURABLY TO PHOSPHORUS FERTILIZATION

Authors:   J. Ystaas, O. Frøynes
Keywords:   Prunus avium, fertilizer, P, yield, fruit size, sweet cherry
Abstract:
‘Kristin’ sweet cherry (Prunus avium L.) responded positively to phosphorus fertilization in a field trial over a period of 13 years in the experimental orchard of Ullensvang Research Centre. The trial was carried out on a virgin sandy soil high in organic matter (7.7 %) seriously affected by acid soil conditions (pH 4.4) and very low phosphorus-supplying power: plant available P was only 1.1 mg P/100 g soil at the start of the experiment. Application of 20 kg P.ha-1 per year significantly increased tree size as measured by trunk girth, cumulative yield, yield efficiency and fruit size. The sweet cherry trees had a sufficient supply of P when soil plant available P was above 4 mg soil and leaf P was in the range 0.20–0.30 % P in leaf dry matter.
