GARLIC MICROPROPAGATION BY SOMATIC EMBRYOGENESIS

Authors:   T. Bockish, Y. Saranga, A. Altman
Abstract:
Garlic (Allium sativum L.) plants usually form flowers which fail to bear viable seeds. Consequently, the cloves are normally used for garlic propagation, even though they present severe limitations, such as low propagation efficiency, pathogen contamination, and high cost. Successful mass cloning by somatic embryogenesis, could overcome some of these limitations. Although somatic embryogenesis has been observed in garlic, it has not been developed for practical application.

The aim of this study was to test the feasibility of somatic embryogenesis as a method for large-scale propagation of garlic plants.
