MICROPROPAGATION OF ORNAMENTAL ALLIUM: AFLATUNENSE AND AMPELOPRASUM

Authors:   D. Evenor, H. Lilien-Kipnis, A.A. Watad, P. Raungian
Keywords:   shoot-regeneration, callus, bulblets, rooting
Abstract:
Allium aflatunense and ampeloprasum have great potential for cut flower production. However, their low natural vegetative propagation rate and high cost of bulb production would make an efficient micropropagation technique commercially highly desirable.

Prolific bulblet and shoot regeneration was induced in-vitro on MS media supplemented with NAA and BA. A high kinetin to IAA ratio in the medium induced proliferation of embryogenic-like callus. which regenerated shoots and bulblets. Inflorescence explants gave highest regeneration rates. Rooting in A. aflatunense was low under all treatments tried, and unnrooted plantlets did not survive transfer to ex-vitro conditions.
