TISSUE CULTURE AS A MEANS IN THE PRODUCTION OF HARDY LILIES

Author:   V. Pelkonen
Keywords:   biotechnology, micropropagation, breeding, cold tolerance, Lilium species, immediate epigeal (IE), delayed hypogeal (DH)
Abstract:
Lilies (Lilium) are grown in Finland in their ultimate climatic conditions, where only a few species have proved to be hardy. Still, there are several potential species in the genus, that have not been tested in the cold climate yet. As a material for the breeding of cold tolerant lilies the traditional hardy species should be used together with the new potential ones. With the aid of new techniques it is possible to introduce totally new hybrids and strains with special tolerance to coldness.
