ISHS Acta Horticulturae 447: III International Symposium on In Vitro Culture and Horticultural  Breeding

PREFACE

Authors:   A. Altman, M. Ziv
Abstract:
This book contains the majority of the presentations at the Third International Symposium on In Vitro Culture and Horticultural Breeding that was held in Jerusalem, Israel, June 16–21, 1996. The first symposium of the In Vitro Culture and Horticultural Breeding Working Group of ISHS was held in Cessena, Italy, 1989 (convened by Silviero Sansavini; Richard H. Zimmerman, Working Group chairperson), and the second one in Baltimore, USA (convened by Freddi Hammerschlag, who served afterwards as the Working Group chairperson). The third symposium was convened by Arie Altman and Meira Ziv (Arie Altman, Working Group chairperson), and is the first one held within the new Commission Biotechnology of the ISHS, chaired by Richard H. Zimmerman. The fourth symposium of the In Vitro Culture and Horticultural Breeding Working Group will be convened by Seppo Sorvari in Finland, 2000.

Horticultural biotechnology has expanded considerably during the last decade, covering a wide range of topics that were discussed in the third symposium. These included in vitro culture as applicable to micropropagation, plant development and physiology on one hand, and to advanced breeding, aided by recent achievements in molecular biology, on the other. The symposium examined a wide range of critical research topics, unexplored areas, potential applications and future directions towards the 21st century, that will no doubt affect many crops: vegetables, flowers and ornamental plants and fruit trees alike.

Accordingly, the various contributions are grouped under six major themes:

  • Tissue culture applications and in vitro propagation, including organogenesis and somatic embryogenesis
  • Resistance to biotic and abiotic stress: genetic engineering and regulation
  • Breeding, genetic manipulations and transformation
  • Conservation of plant genetic resources
  • Improvement of horticultural traits through biotechnology
  • Public and commercial aspects of horticultural biotechnology

All in all, the book contains some 46 full papers of the oral presentations (including invited papers) and 94 short papers of the posters. The published contributions are preceded by a general introduction, expressing an overview by the symposium convenors on the subject of horticultural biotechnology.

The published contributions of this book were not intended to provide a complete treatise of the subject area. Our purpose was to present a cross section of recent accomplishments and of the direction into the future. The articles present the opinion of the symposium participants and their points of views. Some of them present results of current topics in horticultural biotechnology, others were intended also to be provocative and to point out new bearings for future research.

While we have made every effort to reach uniformity in terminology and style, the presented results, the expressed ideas and the final shape of the manuscript remained the sole responsibility of the presenting authors.

We wish to express our sincere gratitude to each one of the symposium paticipants and contributors for their enthusiastic cooperation. We are especially grateful to the members of the International Advisory Board and to the local Organizing Committee for their unequaled help in organizing the symposium. We would like to acknowledge the several national, international and private organizations for supporting this meeting. Special thanks are due to Dr. M. Maluszynski, for the generous contribution of the Joint FAO/IAEA Division, Vienna. The assistance in editing the volume of our research student, Ms. Basia Vinocur, is gratefully acknowledged.
