FLOWER-BUD DIFFERENTIATION OF HIGHBUSH AND RABBITEYE BLUEBERRIES

Author:   T. Tamada
Keywords:   Morphogenesis, Vaccinium corymbosum, V. ashei, flower organ, Japan
Abstract:
Flower-bud differentiation and development of flower organs of the highbush blueberry cultivar 'Jersey' and rabbiteye blueberry cultivars, 'Woodard' and 'Tifblue' were investigated for four years, in 1985, 1987, 1992, and 1994. Five plants of each (five-years-old in 1985), were used to test each cultivar at the college farm. About twenty spring shoots were sampled periodically per cultivar. The morphological flower bud was observed on the terminal bud.

Flower-bud differentiation of highbush blueberry was studied for the whole month of July (its ripening season) and rabbiteye blueberry plants from the middle of July to the middle of September.

After flower-bud differentiation, the formation of flower organs progressed in order of pedicel, sepal, corolla, stamen, pistil and ovule. Ovule formation continued until the end of September for 'Jersey' highbush blueberry the middle of November for 'Woodard' and 'Tifblue' rabbiteye blueberries.
