ISHS Acta Horticulturae 446: VI International Symposium on Vaccinium Culture

U.S. CHANGES IN HEALTH CLAIMS AND NUTRITIONAL LABELING FOR FOODS AND DIETARY SUPPLEMENTS

Author:   M. Camire
Keywords:   anthocyanins, bilberry, blueberry, cranberry, regulations
Abstract:
Bilberries, blueberries, cranberries and other Vaccinium species offer many health benefits to consumers. Although development of new cultivars with higher levels of phytochemicals may appear desirable, existing government regulations limit health claims and nutrient content claims for both foods and dietary supplements. Supplements may bear health claims that are not permitted for foods, possibly leading consumers to use supplements rather than eating a healthy diet rich in fruits and vegetables. Additional clinical studies using Vaccinium fruits and their derivatives are needed to justify future health claims.
