ISHS Acta Horticulturae 445: IV International Symposium on Hazelnut

COREIDAE AND PENTATOMIDAE HARMFUL TO HAZELNUTS IN NORTHERN ITALY (RHYNCHOTA HETEROPTERA)

Authors:   L. Tavella, A. Arzone, C. Sargiotto, C. Sonnati
Keywords:   Gonocerus acuteangulatus, Palomena prasina, pests, hazelnut dropping
Abstract:
The species of bugs harmful to hazelnuts were sampled weekly in three groves of the Langhe region in Piemonte (northwestern Italy) from May to August 1995. During each sampling half of the canopy of six plants was beaten and the fallen biological material was collected and examined in the laboratory. Seven bug species were found, of which Gonocerus acuteangulatus and Palomena prasina were the most abundant. Population dynamics of these bugs were checked on hazelnut plants. Independently of the control method, the pests had a different localization in the investigated area: 95.90% of G. acuteangulatus specimens were sampled in one of the groves, 75.44% of P. prasina ones were collected in another. From 11 July to 29 August the hazelnuts dropping during samplings were weighed and 10% of them were observed and classified in symptomless, spotted, browned, belted, and full or aborted. At harvest-time hazelnut samples were monitored in the field and in the warehouse to ascertain the damages. Injuries caused by the bug feeding activity were always lower than 1% in the grove where G. acuteangulatus and P. prasina were scarce, whereas they were very variable and higher than 3% in the other two groves.
