ISHS Acta Horticulturae 445: IV International Symposium on Hazelnut

BLACKSEA HAZELNUT AND HAZELNUT PRODUCTS EXPORTERS

Author:   A. Baskan
Abstract:
The Black Sea Region Hazelnut and Hazelnut Products Exporters' Union was established in 1940 as a semi-official organization of the Under Secretariat of the Treasury and Foreign Trade of the Prime Ministry. The Union has 300 active members 60% of whom are directly involved in hazelnut exportation.

The Union carries out studies on market and price condition of hazelnuts and hazelnut products, in order to provide its members with-up-to date information. The other functions of the Union are; to study the problems which might hinder its members in carring out their activities and propose solutions to these problems, to collect statistical data on hazelnuts, and, when so authorized by the State, to approve official documentation of hazelnut exportation.

It should be agreed that it gives itself a continous control when exporters to their activities under the knowledge of one foundation. And this is an important matter for the formation of healthy markets.

Our Union covers its costs by cutting 0,1% from the export amounts of the Union members exporters.

In addition, there is a fund established with again 0,1% taken from the export amounts in order to be used for hazelnut promotion since 1st. September. 1995.

As it is known Turkey has a share of about 75% in the production and international marketing of hazelnut.

It should be agreed that Turkey with such a big share in the production and International marketing of the hazelnut wants to sell its goods on the stable markets where the prices are reasonable to its buyers and also profitable to both farmers, exporters and Turkey.

This fact can not be renounced so that Turkey can maintain its 75 % market share obtained in terms of good quality on the world markets and so that it can increase its exports according to the increase in the production.

But unfortunately Turkish exporters are sometimes exposed to the unfounded criticisms of the importers about the quality of Turkish hazelnut and stability of the market.

The critics in question have been expressed by the representative of the firm Daarnhouwer Co.BV Mr. Jack Taillie at the INC meeting in Luxemburg on 14–16 May 1995.

During the discussion made with Mr. Jack Taillie just after his speech, it had been pointed out that his critics about the quality and exportation of the Turkish hazelnut would be evaluated from our side and that the subject would be discussed at the next INC meeting in Tel Aviv held 18–20 May 1996. But Mr. Taillie did not participate in the Meeting in Tel Aviv, so this subject could not be discussed.
