Abstract:
Most of hazelnut production in the world is destined to the kernel market for processing. “Tonda Gentile delle Langhe” (TGL) is the most important cultivar grown in North Italy for the good quality of the kernel and for the particularly suitable processing characteristics.
Yet TGL has some unsatisfactory traits, such as the medium percent kernel and the inconstant productivity.
For this reason, 5 known cultivars and 7 hybrid selections, obtained within a breeding program, have been evaluated and compared to TGL as an alternative or for being associated with this cultivar.
Percent kernel resulted improved in all but 2 of the hybrids; 2 selections (sel. 101 and sel. 104E = TGL x Cosford), in particular, showed values of 55% and 52% kernel respectively with blanching, tasting and flavour characteristics comparable or superior to those of TGL. Selection 104E is going to be a new cultivar destined to the kernel market under the name of “Daria”. Among the studied cultivars Tonda di Giffoni was the most interesting for its adaptability to the environment, for the good blanching and for the tasting characteristics.
