Abstract:
Phenological and pomological characteristics of five introduced cultivars (i.e ‘Corabel’, ‘Ennis’, ‘Merveille de Bollwiller’, ‘Butler’ and ‘Tonda di Giffoni’) were investigated.
They have been compared with ‘Istrska dolgoplodna leska’ (‘Istrian long filbert’) which is the main hazelnut cultivar in Slovenia for now.
All of them are from the orchard ‘Gornje Mrasevo’ which have been planted in 1991 in the southeastern part of the country.
After five growth period some data will be presented as follows : flowering period of pistilate and staminate flowers, growth vigour, dimensions of plants, number of suckers per plant; susceptibility to low temperatures, hazelnut weevil and big bud mite; number of nuts per cluster, total number of nuts per plant; husk dehiscence; lenght, width and thickness of nuts, weight of the in-shell nuts and the kernels, index of roundness, percentage of normal and defective nuts, characteristics of perisperm and the level of pellicle removal.
Preliminary results of testing foreign cultivars show their good acclimatization ability in the pedoclimatic conditions of Slovenia.
The next step of the testing will last for the next five years.
It is expected that some of the investigated cultivars will be recommended for commercial planting in our country.
