Abstract:
Kiwifruits were treated with 130 μl/1 propylene under 1%,5%,10%,13%,16%, and 21% O2 gas mixture in a continuous flow-through system at 20°C. Control kiwifruits were kept in air (21% O2). Flesh firmness, soluble solids content, internal ethylene concentration, 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid concentration (ACC) and ethylene-forming enzyme (EFE) activity were measured during the experiment.
Ethylene biosynthesis and fruit ripening were stimulated when kiwifruits were exposed to the mixture of propylene in air.
Reduction of oxygen concentration (<10%) inhibited the effectiveness of propylene on autocatalytic ethylene production.
Exposure of kiwifruits to low oxygen concentration (<5%) delayed the propylene induced fruit-ripening.
The great difference between half maximum rates for ripening (3%) and autocatalytic ethylene production (10.3%) demonstrates the independence of the two processes in kiwifruits.
