PLOIDY IN ACTINIDIA

Authors:   A.R. Ferguson, I.E.W. O'Brien, G.J. Yan
Keywords:   Actinidia, kiwifruit, ploidy chromosome numbers, flow cytometry
Abstract:
The genus has a reticulate polyploid structure with diploids, tetraploids and hexaploids in diminishing frequency. We report for the first time naturally occurring octaploid plants of A. arguta var. purpurea. Some Actinidia taxa, such as A. chinensis var. chinensis contain individuals with different ploidy levels. Counting Actinidia chromosomes is a laborious process as they are both very small and very numerous. Flow cytometry has been used to estimate ploidy levels in more than 350 individuals from 24. There is a clear relationship between the DNA content of 2C nuclei and ploidy level. We have also screened more than 100 plants arising from interspecific and interploidy crosses. The results indicate that no assumptions should be made as to the ploidy of any Actinidia plant.
