MYO-INOSITOL IS A MAJOR CARBOHYDRATE IN SPECIES OF ACTINIDIA

Authors:   K. Klages, G. Smith, R. Bieleski
Abstract:
In Actinidia deliciosa cv. Hayward and A. arguta myo-inositol is a major carbohydrate in leaf and fruit tissue. Over 70 % of total sugar in the fruit of A. arguta is myo-inositol 38 days after anthesis while in fruit of A. deliciosa cv. Hayward it is 10–20 % of total sugars throughout fruit development. While A. deliciosa cv. Hayward accumulates glucose rather than starch in early fruit development, in A. arguta sugar imported into the fruit is converted into starch very early on in development. In leaves of A. arguta and A. deliciosa cv. Hayward myo-inositol comprises about 10 % and 20 % respectively throughout the season of fruit development. The main sugar in leaves of both species is sucrose. The main translocated sugar in both species is sucrose but myo-inositol is present in small amounts in phloem exudates and in phloem tissue.
