Abstract:
A study of four planting distances, 5 m x 5 m, 5 m x 4 m, 5 m x 3 m and 5 m x 2 m was carried out on a young kiwifruit orchard cv. 'Hayward' in Asturias, Northern Spain, for the period 1991–1994. Vines were grafted onto 'Bruno' seedling rootstocks, and trained to a 'T-Bar', except those at 5 x 2 trained to 'Fussetto'. 5 x 2 treatment yielded over the rest of treatments on the first year.
From the 2nd year on 5 x 3 and 5 x 4 treatments achieved the higher yields.
Concerning cumulative yield per m2 plant density of 5 x 3 achieved the highest (6.74 kg/m2) followed by 5 x 4 (6.16 kg/m2), both well over the other treatments; in any case 5 x 2 (fussetto) yielded clearly below the T-Bar treatments.
Yield efficiency increased with planting distance and was much higher in plants trained in T-Bar respect to those in fussetto.
