Abstract:
European Standards (EN's) are being formulated to satisfy the prime function of the EU to enable free-trade of goods across boundaries of the member states.
To a lesser extent, this applies to EFTA member countries as well.
The CEN (Comite European de Normalisation) committee whose members are the participating national standards bodies, has the task of completing this work and has created a technical committee TC284 to formulate a standard for glass and plastic greenhouses.
The technical committee presently intends to produce a Category A standard which will require manufacturers to display a 'CEN' mark of conformity of the product to the standard even if it is being sold in that member's own country.
This obviously has implications for manufacturers and purchasers of greenhouses in countries which are both inside and outside the EU. The new standard is presently being prepared to be submitted to the CEN for the inquiry stage and the time scale proposed to finalize the work and reach a point of voting on acceptance is October 1997. The standard is based on Eurocode I with variations specific to the particular requirements of Greenhouses and in particular requires that Glasshouses be designed to serviceability limit states and flexibly clad structures (such as polytunnels) be designed to ultimate limit states only.
