ORCHARD TRAINING OF LATERAL FRUIT-BEARING WALNUT VARIETIES ASSESSMENT OF TRIALS CARRIED OUT IN FRANCE

Authors:   E. Germain, J.M. Lespinasse, P. Reynet, M. Bayol
Abstract:
Six different training systems were compared on two lateral fruit-bearing walnut varieties, Pedro and Lara cv. For trees trained individually in orchards, comparisons were made on goblet, modified central leader and free vertical axis. In hedgerows trees were trained in oblique palmette, free vertical flattened axis and sloping axis.

Data collected in four trials, on six to thirteen year-old trees are analyzed and the advantages and inconveniences of each system are discussed.

The best systems are the free vertical axis with trees trained individually in an orchard and the flattened free vertical axis with oblique pruning in the case of hedgerows. The hedgerows trained following this system are being developed in France with lateral fruit-bearing varieties.
