STUDIES ON THE PATCH-BUDDING OF WALNUTS IN DIFFERENT BUDDING PERIODS UNDER SUBTROPICAL CONDITIONS

Authors:   A. Küden, N. Kaska
Abstract:
The seeds of Juglans regia L. were used as rootstock in this experiment. The seedlings were transplanted to the containers one by one in each container in January 1993 and the budding begun from June 1994, periodically. Patch budding method and two years old bud grafts of Yalova-4 walnut variety were used in all the budding periods.

In the "Container method", each of 10 seedlings were budded and planted in the containers all together and taken into the glasshouse at the end of the budding season. All of the budded plants were transplanted to the orchards in spring of 1995. The highest budding percentage (93.4%) were obtained from the individually grown plants in the containers, performed on 26th of September. This was followed by the plants grown according to the "container method" (82.2%) performed on 27th of September.
