ISHS Acta Horticulturae 442: III International Walnut Congress

BEHAVIOUR OF SOME WALNUT-TREE (JUGLANS REGIA) VARIETIES IN “REGIÃO AGRÁRIA DA BEIRA LITORAL”

Authors:   M.J. Ribeiro da Silva, N. Neves, J.M. Crispim
Keywords:   bursting, blooming, walnut blight (Xanthomonas campestris pv. juglandis), yield
Abstract:
There is a great surface of clay-calcareous soils in the geographic area of Direcção Regional de Agricultura da Beira Litoral that allows the expansion of walnut-trees.

So, a walnut-tree orchard with fifteen varieties was planted in 1982 and 1984 which major goal was to follow the behaviour of the species: bursting date, blooming date, sensibility to diseases and production level.

The orchard intends to know the behaviour of each one of these varieties as well as to give information concerning the choice of the ones with economical interest to the region.

Thus, while the french varieties could have some advantages in orchards of the inner zone of the region (late spring frost risks), american and portuguese ones showed an early and better production.
