CHERRY GROWING IN THE SUBTROPICS

Authors:   A.B. Küden, A. Küden, N. Kaska
Abstract:
Recently, cherries are tended to be grown under subtropical conditions. This experiment is carried out in Adana to see the performances of sweet and sour cherries in mild climates and to see the effects of chemical applications on breaking dormancy of the buds. Stella, Noir de Guben, Van and Bing sweet cherry and Kütahya local sour cherry cultivars were used in the experiments.

The chilling requirements of sweet cherry cultivars were found between 600–1200 hours for Stella, 700–800 hours for Noir de Guben and 1000–1200 hours for Van as the result of 4 years' experiments. The chill units of these cultivars were found between 218–310 units for Stella, 252–310 units for Noir de Guben, 370–390 units for Van. Considering the results, Stella and Noir de Guben seem to be suitable to grow under subtropical conditions with some cultural practices.

KNO3+thiourea (2 %+1 %) combination and Dormex (0.5 %) applied to the sweet cherry trees. KNO3+thiourea application caused 100 %, 96 %, 92 % and 77% of bud break in Stella, Van, Noir de Guben and Bing, respectively. Another chemical application was carried out on Kütahya sour cherry cultivar with KNO3, Dormex, KNO3+thiourea and Dormex+Armobreak combinations to break dormancy and the highest budbreak rate (80 %) was obtained from KNO3+thiourea (4%+2%) application and followed by Dormex (1 %) application (60 %). Control trees gave 13 % of bud break.
