Abstract:
From 1989 to 1991 an experiment was conducted with 4 strawberry varieties (Pocahontas, Vista, Tufts and Cruz) on high tunnel sack culture.
The effects of different growing substrates, namely sand (S), farmyard manure (FYM), peat (P), with solarized or unsolarized mixtures, of planting systems, [summer planting (SP) fresh runner plants rooted in pots (FRPRP) and fall planting (FP)] on earliness of harvest were investigated.
Both planting systems and varieties affected earliness.
The first fruits were picked at the end of November and at the beginning of December.
Although FRPRP and FP both hastened maturity, the former was superior to FP due to earlier and higher yields.
SP delayed maturity.
Among the varieties Cruz was the earliest.
